Modelling clay is a fascinating thing. It can produce wonderful, artistic projects that astound people. If you like the sound of modelling clay and want to know more about it, read ahead. Here, we will find out the different types of clay and my picks for the best modelling clay you can buy.

Finding the right clay to use is essential. Before parting with your hard-earned cash, you need something that will do what you need. There are four main types of clay, that you should become familiar with.

Otherwise known as plasticine, oil-based clay is different from pottery clay in that it stays soft and workable. It doesn’t stick to your hands, which is extremely useful. However, it cannot be fired.

  • Perfect for modelling clay in stop animation. For sculptures that need to be changed and re-molded again and again.

This clay has various degrees of softness at room temperature and can be mixed; adding stiff clay to soft, to toughen it up. You finish projects with polymer clay by placing them in the oven to fire. You can buy polymer clay in the color you wish. Or, you can paint the finished product whatever colors you want.

  • Polymer clay is perfect for crafters making jewelry.

Everyone will have heard of this by the branded name, PlayDoh! Used by millions of children around the world, dough modelling clay is a soft clay that can be reused. It can be colored by food dye, or colored in after its been cooked. Only negative of dough clay is its tendency to crack when it dries.

Firing Clay

Used for pottery and stoneware, firing clay is worked by hand on a potter’s wheel. It is designed to be fired in a kiln, then glazed once done.

  • Kneading makes a huge difference when using firing clay!
